In memory Fang, Roland Chung (1902-1992), one of the founding members of the English program at SISU, the SES set up Fang, Roland Chung Translation Competition in 2011. Fang, known for his Chaucerian scholarship and translation of Tao Yuanming’s poems and other works, was a leading scholar in Middle English, comparative literature and English teaching. As a man of noble character, a scholar of erudition and self-discipline and a highly accomplished translator, Fang is the epitome of SISU’s motto – Integrity, Vision and Academic Excellence.

The competition was intended to encourage students to follow the beacon of Fang’s excellence and become outstanding English and Translation majors. It is yet another attempt by the SES, which launched a lecture series on Humanities earlier, to set up role models for humanistic reform of the English major.
