Pilot Program, English &Translation and Interpreting

1.Aims

The pilot program in Humanities was as part of the SES’s effective humanistic reform of its English teaching, which is built on the philosophy that the cultivation of high-end innovative talents should start from the undergraduate level. The program focuses on the construction of the students’ knowledge about Chinese and foreign literature, history and philosophy and the development of research skills and competences in Humanities and Social Sciences. It is yet another effort by the SES to explore new ways and new models for the cultivation of high-end English majors and research talents in Humanities and Social Sciences and Regional and National Studies to meet the urgent needs of the strategic development of the country.

 2.Outcomes

Ⅰ. Solid English language skills, including comprehensive skills in listening, speaking, reading,writing and translating.

Ⅱ. Knowledge about Chinese and foreign literature, history and philosophy, and a broad horizon of liberal arts;

Ⅲ. Mastery of the basics of five major disciplinary directions, i.e. English Linguistics, Literature, Culture Studies, Translation and Interpreting, and Regional and National Studies, and choose one of them as the field of further academic pursuit.

Ⅳ. Sound knowledge about the chosen research field; 

Ⅴ. Mastery of basic research skills of Humanities and Social Sciences, including strong problem awareness and the ability to conduct academic research;

Ⅵ. A good command of a second foreign language.  

3.Duration

The duration of the program is normally four years, but students can complete the program in a minimum of three years or a maximum of six years. 4.Degree and Credits

Students must earn 160 credits by fulfilling all the requirements within the given period. Those who meet the standards will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts.

5.Curriculum

The curriculum consists of five components: general education, basic disciplinary education, humanistic studies (selected readings of original classics, research methodology, Chinese literature and culture and international studies), elective disciplinary education and practical education.
